Robert Nesta Marley naît le 6 février 1945 à St-Ann, dans la paroisse de Nine Miles. Fils d'un capitaine blanc de la marine parti une fois son forfait commis et d'une paysanne jamaïcaine noire, il découvre la difficulté d'être métisse, pris entre deux mondes qui s'ignorent. Adolescent, il quitte la campagne pour Kingston, comme beaucoup de jamaïcains que la misère poussent vers les villes. Pourtant, le travail y est rare et Bob vit à Trenchtown, sordide ghetto où se concentrent la pauvreté, le crime et la crasse, dans une promiscuité bien peu poétique au premier abord. Là, il rencontre Bunny Livingston, puis Peter Mackintosh, comme lui passionnés de musique. Peter joue un peu de guitare et les trois amis chantent les tubes de Rythm'n'Blues entendus sur les radios de Miami.

Bob Marley enregistra son premier morceau, Judge not, à 16 ans, en 1961. Une industrie musicale commençait à se développer à Kingston, de façon désordonnée. Le taux de chômage était alors de 35 %. Il venait de laisser tomber son job de soudeur. Judge Not passe inaperçu mais Bob persiste. En 1964, il forme les Wailing Wailers avec Peter Tosh et Bunny Wailer. Bientôt, ils signent un contrat avec le Studio One, le label de Clement "Coxsone" Dodd. Leur premier titre, Simmer Down, sera le tube de 1961 en Jamaïque. Devenus les Wailers, ils travaillent avec Leslie Kong, puis avec Lee "Scratch" Perry. A chaque fois la collaboration est fructueuse sur le plan artistique mais décevante sur le plan financier. En Jamaïque, les droits d'auteurs ne signifient pas grand chose, et même les chanteurs à succès ne parviennent pas, alors, à vivre de leur production. Les Wailers ne perçoivent que très peu d'argent tout en étant d'énormes vedettes locales. Cheveux courts, costumes chics, les Wailers jouent du ska et du Rock Steady. La compétition, alors, est rude. Pour beaucoup de jeunes du ghetto, la musique constitue un espoir de sortir de la misère. En 1971, la chanson Trenchtown Rock cartonne dans toute l'île.

Le plus grand chanteur de reggae jamaïcain, Bob Marley, de son vrai nom Robert Nesta Marley, meurt d'un cancer à l'âge de 36 ans. Fils d'un Blanc et d'une Noire, il a grandi dans une famille pauvre et déchirée par les conflits. En 1964, avec le groupe The Wailers, il obtient un premier succès en Jamaïque. En 1967, il se convertit au rastafarisme, adopte les "dreadlocks" et arbore les couleurs vert, jaune et rouge du drapeau éthiopien. Ses chansons qui véhiculent un message d'amour et de paix ont popularisé le reggae au monde entier.
